We hit go on our 2021 Strava Challenge just 10 days ago and already the existing KOM has been broken! Nick Gould, our 2020 winner, went out last weekend and crushed it up Mt. Herman to start off the challenge with a bang. His time of 36.54 knocked 2 minutes off the previous best time set back in 2014. The good news is that everyone has almost two more weeks to knock Nick out of that KOM spot, and the same for the ladies for the QOM.

These days Ryan Standish resides in Heber City, Utah, but we caught up with him on the road last week between races in Arkansas.
The Pikes Peak APEX presented by RockShox is announcing the 2021 Strava Challenge!
Again this year the Strava Challenge will feature a significant climb in the Pikes Peak APEX, Mt. Herman Road. Mt. Herman is the first climb on Day 2 and is the first big test on the longest day of the entire event. It is a 7.8 mile climb with just under 2000 feet of elevation which starts just three miles into the Day 2 start.
The statistics don't lie. Half of cyclists are female. Less than one-third participate in organized events. It's easy to offer an equal payout. It's so much harder to have an equal number roll up to the start line. We're taking a hard look at what we can do to inspire and empower women to participate in events like The APEX.
Episode 1 features Celeste Cannon, 2nd place finisher in the Women’s 40+ category at last year’s Pikes Peak APEX presented by RockShox, who just happens to be the two-time reigning Colorado State XC Champion. Celeste tells us what she is doing differently this season to prepare. It’s something all of us should be tuned in to! Take a look, and bear with us..it was a little windy when this was shot.
I spent some time last month video chatting with Evelyn Dong from her home in Park City, Utah. We covered all the basics - What bike will she ride? What fuel will be in her pocket? How fat will her tires be? Where's she racing this season? How can we bring more women to the sport? But, we came out of this interview with way more.
Deanna couldn’t escape the excitement around the RockShox office surrounding the The APEX last year. More comfortable in flats than clipless pedals, she was intrigued by the 4 days of racing on familiar trails. So, at the last minute, she borrowed a more XC style bike with a SID fork and made the leap into her first race!
There weren’t a ton of options for racing in 2020, and the inaugural Pikes Peak APEX presented by RockShox was one of a handful of races. With a COVID-19 Mitigation Plan in place, the event was able to pull off 4 days of action. Chloe Woodruff, one of the top mountain bike racers in the country, took notice. Chloe competed for Team USA in the 2016 Rio Olympics and is part of the Tokyo 2021 long team.
When registration opened for the 2021 Pikes Peak APEX presented by RockShox, Tom Turney, from Monument, Colorado was the first to sign up. Colorado Springs' own Russell Finsterwald, Men's Overall Winner for 2020, reached out to welcome Tom and ask what's he's looking forward to at this year's event.
