Pikes Peak APEX
To thrive during a 4-day race like The APEX, you must gauge your efforts wisely in the early miles to have something left for the finale. Here's a guide to help you achieve your pacing and performance goals.
Staying at the top of your game for four days requires a little knowledge and some thoughtful planning. What you do - and don’t do - between stages of the Pikes Peak APEX will make a big difference on how you feel and fast you can go the following day.
No matter whether you are competing for the $25,000 in prize money at The 2022 Pikes Peak APEX presented by RockShox, racing to win your age group, or riding to have a great adventure, we want every rider to have a safe and fun experience. It is also important to be good stewards of the area trail systems and good trail citizens. Here is a primer on rider etiquette for mountain bike racing so we can all go hard, race competitively, and still be friends at the end of the day.
The physical side of training gets the lion’s share of attention, but when athletes are evenly matched in power output, technical skill, and VO2 max, mental skills can make all the difference. Whether you are racing to win, pursuing a personal best, or riding at party pace, a mountain bike stage race like the Pikes Peak APEX presents unique mental challenges. Just as you train your body to prepare for the miles and technical challenges, it is wise to use time during training and tune-up races to hone your mental skills.

What should you bring to The APEX in September? Whether you are coming to Colorado Springs, Colorado to race for one day or ride all four, you’re in for a treat. September typically has some of the best weather of the year: crisp and cool mornings, warm afternoons but not too hot, low probability of afternoon thunderstorms, and bright yellow leaves on the aspens. That said, The Pikes Peak APEX presented by RockShox is also at altitudes between 6,000 and 10,000 feet above sea level and Rocky Mountain weather can change very quickly.
Watch as over 25 riders are interviewed at the 2021 Pikes Peak APEX presented by RockShox and learn what makes this a 'can't miss' event on everyone's fall calendar.
