If you have ever been part of planning an event, you can imagine the work that goes into planning The APEX. Organizing and permitting a cycling event with a single course can be daunting. Multiply the number of days and courses by 4, and you are looking at quite a challenge! Luckily, our team loves a challenge, especially Course Director, Daniel Matheny!

As our friend and announcer Dave Towle would say, the Pikes Peak APEX Strava Challenge is done and dusted for 2021! Dusty it was, as our two winners threw dirt on both of the former KOM/QOM holders and raged up Mt. Herman road in record time.
We hit go on our 2021 Strava Challenge just 10 days ago and already the existing KOM has been broken! Nick Gould, our 2020 winner, went out last weekend and crushed it up Mt. Herman to start off the challenge with a bang. His time of 36.54 knocked 2 minutes off the previous best time set back in 2014. The good news is that everyone has almost two more weeks to knock Nick out of that KOM spot, and the same for the ladies for the QOM.
The Pikes Peak Apex presented by RockShox is awarding you a bit differently this year. Yes, we are providing equal prize money for women and men! Yes, we are bringing back the big prize purse! Yes, we are still paying out super deep! But this time around—no double dipping into cash and prizes.
My friends, this year riders must declare if they want to race Pro/Open for a chance to win podium money from 1st all the way to 15th place, or race within their age group for a shot at some sweet prizes. Size up your level of competition, and choose your adventure wisely.
I spent some time last month video chatting with Evelyn Dong from her home in Park City, Utah. We covered all the basics - What bike will she ride? What fuel will be in her pocket? How fat will her tires be? Where's she racing this season? How can we bring more women to the sport? But, we came out of this interview with way more.
We caught up with Russell Finsterwald last Friday, at the end of a long training week to reminisce about the inaugural race. He revels us in the feeling of hitting Captain Jacks at race speed, dishes his favorite post ride nosh spots and issues a challenge to anyone and everyone coming to Colorado Springs this September!
