31 miles + 3,370 feet of climbing
Saturday's stage will offer riders a lot of singletrack and a bit of an adventure with a seldom-used trail in the middle of out-and-back. Stage 3 will be a slightly easier day than Friday with 31 miles and a bit over 3,300 feet of climbing.
Starting in Woodland Park, the course will revisit a trail used in the 2020 edition of The APEX and take riders up to the Rampart Range using the singletrack in Lovell Gulch and then cut over to remote Forest Service roads to the east.
Riders will drop down and ride below the Rampart Reservoir dam to Nichols Reservoir before continuing clockwise on the Rampart Reservoir singletrack, used in the opposite direction for the 2020 event. After climbing back up and out of the reservoir on Shubarth trail, the course leads riders back the way they came via the seldom-used 755 trail and then descends back down Lovell Gulch.
PRE RIDE NOTICE: The Utilities road that climbs out of Nichols Reservoir is NOT open to the public and cannot be ridden until race day. You are welcome to check out the singletrack down from Rampart Res to Nichols Res, but you will need to go back up the way you came and ride over the Rampart Res Dam to continue.
*PLEASE NOTE*--Riders will need to make it to the first feed zone (mile 9.1) by 10:45 to continue riding on the course. Riders who don't make that time cut will be turned back toward Woodland Park.
