We spent some time last month catching up with renowned endurance coach, Chris Carmichael, who finished 3rd in the Master’s 60+ category at last year’s APEX. Founder of Carmichael Training Systems (CTS), Chris was an Olympian and professional cyclist before embarking on a coaching career. He coached Team USA during the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games and founded CTS in 2000. Among Carmichael's many accomplishments, he was inducted into the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame in 2003, has written 10 books and boasts an incredible resume of athletes who have succeeded under his tutelage. You might even have a copy of The Time-Crunched Cyclist on your bookshelf.

CTS has grown to become a leader in endurance coaching, with over 60 coaches offering expertise to a variety of athletes and professional sports teams. A pioneer of online coaching tools, CTS offers packages for general fitness goals, as well as specific racing goals and bucket list experiences. In fact, CTS has developed a 10-week training plan for The APEX, it includes detailed workout prescriptions and is complimentary to any rider who wants to make the most of their adventure. Chris has also written a nutrition plan for you to follow, knowing that 4 big days on the bike is quite a challenge.

Living in Colorado Springs with his family, Chris was excited to come together with Sports Strategies to help launch and grow Pikes Peak APEX. In his view, the region's trails highlight the best of what Colorado Springs offers, and he enjoys the opportunity to spotlight the area to the cycling community and show mountain bikers what makes it special.

When I last spoke with Chris he was looking forward to an upcoming knee replacement. Hopefully he’s recovering well and getting ready for September! We look forward to seeing him on the trails again soon.

Make sure to watch this Rider Spotlight for Chris’s favorite dirt haunts, how to train for the best APEX experience (starting now) and why Daniel Matheny was part of Chris’s favorite moment of the 2020 APEX.
