2020 Stage 1 Winner, Rose Grant

The Pikes Peak Apex presented by RockShox is awarding you a bit differently this year. Yes, we are providing equal prize money for women and men! Yes, we are bringing back the big prize purse! Yes, we are still paying out super deep! But this time around—no double dipping into cash and prizes.

My friends, this year riders must declare if they want to race Pro/Open for a chance to win podium money from 1st all the way to 15th place, or race within their age group for a shot at some sweet prizes. Size up your level of competition, and choose your adventure wisely.

“We pay deeper than traditional races—while it is important to give solid paychecks to the podium winners, we know that the riders placing 10-15 are often paying their own way to the races, so it is important for those riders to have cash prizes to offset their own costs of attending,” explains race director, Micah Rice.

Competition for the Top 15 in the Pro/Open field was pretty tough last year—filled with National Champions, Olympians, and professional racers from Xterra and cyclocross. We also saw local riders and privateers eek into the money, so it isn’t impossible! With a $25,000 prize purse split evenly amongst both genders, you’ll have some nice spending cash no matter where you land.

There’s even a $100 bonus for both winners of each stage!

“When this race was first conceived it was always our plan that the women would race the same distance as the men and be eligible for equal prize money.” says Micah Rice

With Equal Pay Day occurring just two weeks ago on March 24th, representing the fact that women earn $0.82 per every $1.00 a man earns, we couldn’t be happier about our position. If we want more women to race, we have to provide everyone with the same level of support. Mountain biking has led other cycling genres when it comes to offering equal prize money for women and men, and we want to continue to make payout parity standard.

Age group winners might not receive cold hard cash, but prizes valued around $800 ain’t too shabby. Age group categories are split by U23, 23-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60+ for the ladies and the gents. We’re collecting some pretty cool prizes for the Top 3 in each category, and trust it will be more than a pint glass and socks. Last year winners took home RockShox Reverb AXS seatposts, Osprey hydration packs, and more!

So which path will you choose?
